Andersonville, Edgewater and Rogers Park residents are hosting a Unity Walk Against Violence Sunday, Sept. 17, noon, starting at Women & Children First Bookstore. The rally is inspired by the Aug, 24 attack on Shahpara Sayeed, 31, who was burned alive while locked in her husband’s cab.
“Unlike many domestic murders, several adults and children in the community witnessed this horrific, surreal scene in broad daylight,” said Unity organizers. “We have witnessed a steady steam of neighbors, religious congregations, youth and Pakistani Americans come to or return to the site to pay their respects. Even after 10 days, fresh flowers, candles, signs, and prayer notes appear at the site [one block from Senn High School].”
Residents of Edgewater, with the organizing assistance of Apna Ghar, an Asian social service organization, and the Organization of the Northeast (ONE), are participating in the Unity Walk to remember Sayeed and other women killed.
