The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has released new information Gale Norton, President Bush’s nominee for Secretary of the Interior.

Norton faced Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee confirmation hearings last week. She has been targeted by gay-rights groups since her nomination over her support for the anti-gay Amendment 2 while she was Colorado’s attorney general. The measure would have outlawed non-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation. It was approved by state voters but overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

According to NGLTF, part of Norton’s efforts to get Amendment 2 passed included hiring anti-gay psychologist Paul Cameron to testify as an expert witness in its defense. Just before the election, Cameron distributed 100,000 copies of a pamphlet entitled, “Medical Consequences of What Homosexuals Do.”

Norton has consistently called gay rights “special rights” and called the Supreme Court ruling on Amendment 2 “insulting to Colorado voters.”
