Purdue University recently became the last school in the Big Ten to include sexual orientation in its nondiscrimination policy.
Motivated in part by the arrival of new university President Martin Jischke, students began pushing for the amendment last fall.
The Purdue Equality Alliance (PEA), a student group formed last spring to tackle political issues of GLBTs, had been lobbying Jischke ever since he arrived on campus Aug. 14 after nine years as president of Iowa State University, a school that offers sexual orientation protections.
Jischke, in a surprise announcement, issued a letter to the Purdue community and officially revised the nondiscrimination policy to include sexual orientation, marital status and parental status, PEA reports.
