John Aravosis, co-founder of StopDrLaura.com, has declared victory in the fight against the TV talk show of Dr. Laura Schlessinger and announced plans to shut down the popular website.

According to Aravosis, StopDrLaura.com has received over 60 million hits and averaged 300,000 visitors per month since its launch March 1, 2000.

Over 150 advertisers in the U.S. and Canada have withdrawn from Schlessinger’s low-rated show, which is currently airing during the overnight shift in most major markets in the U.S. Canada has dropped the show entirely.

“Face it folks, we all came together and we stopped Dr. Laura,” Aravosis said in a release. “It is thus with mixed emotions that I announce today that we’ve decided to pull the plug on StopDrLaura.com. While the site, remarkably, continued to get nearly as many hits as the day we launched, the simple fact is: we won, it’s time to move on.”

He goes on to note that it would take several thousand dollars to keep the site running for another year, money that he said would be better spent on trying to stop Dr. Laura completely.

He also credited the other founders: Joel Lawson, William Waybourn, Alan Klein and Robin Tyler, and activists who lead efforts regionally, including Chicago’s Andy Thayer.

Organizers have now focused their efforts on attorney general designate John Ashcroft, and along with Planned Parenthood have launched a new Web site, www.RoevBush.com.
