The Dr. Laura show arrives in Australia, and is described in the Age by reviewer Paul Kalina: ” … Her foray into television with this syndicated, one-hour daytime show has been a fizzer, with low ratings and a cold shoulder from advertisers. Today’s topic is black-white relations; four black radio hosts, audience members and the disturbingly coiffured Dr Laura (you could cut diamonds on that face) dress anecdotes into Big Statements. The discussion is scattergun, incoherent and deadeningly dull, Dr Laura occasionally contributing an inconsequential and redundant remark. Phil Donahue, please phone home.”

Jay Wolf writes to the Cedar Rapids Gazette in support of gays: “A Jan. 17 letter, ‘Leave Boy Scouts out of controversy,’ was a bunch of unsubstantiated surmises … . Has the writer any proof that ‘No Eagle Scout has ever gone on a shooting rampage?’ Last Nov. 15, I drove to Dubuque to hear Judy Shepard, mother of murdered Matthew Shepard, tell the packed audience at Loras College that one of the two men who beat, brutalized, crucified and left her young son exposed at a freezing, way-out Wyoming place, was an Eagle Scout. Shooting would have been less cruel.
“The letter writer states, ‘The sole purpose of any organism, including man, is to reproduce.’ Are popes, celibate clergy, barren or sterile persons and others who do not reproduce worthless quirks? In nature, not every organism reproduces. Worker bees and non-alpha wolves do not. Some homosexuals do produce their own children. My son, a straight actor in New York City, has many gay friends. They are part of what’s good about America.”
