The Greater Chicago Committee’s annual Bayard Rustin Awards, named in honor of the late gay, African-American civil-rights leader, were held last Friday, June 29, at the DuSable Museum of African American History.

The awards honor the best individuals, groups and businesses serving the African-American GLBT community of Chicago.

GCC founder and executive director emeritus Derrick Hicks was given a special honor for his work with the GCC and the Rustin Awards.

Following are the 2001 award recipients:

Business of the Year: D/E Entertainment

Social Organization: Affinity

Community Organization: Adodi

Party of the Year: Rails Entertainment

Community Activist: Alma Crawford and Karen Hutt of Church of the Open Door

Board of Director’s Award: Dr. George W. Roberts of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control

Black Kettle Award: D. Kevin McNeir, managing editor of the Austin Weekly

Derrick A. Hicks Award: Lorrainne Sade Baskerville of TransGenesis

Founder’s Award: Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County

President’s Award: Ellen A. Meyers

Honorary Award: The Chieftains
