Up-and-running shows we think are hot, or about-to-open shows that should be:
Anna Christie, Apple Tree Theatre, through Oct. 20. The world made her a sinner, but that doesn’t prevent her winning the love of two seafaring men. Who says Eugene O’Neill writes no happy endings? (Barnidge)
Around the World in 80 Days, Lifeline Theatre, through Dec. 1. All the adventure and romance of a world tour in 1872, and we do it in less than two hours. Bon Voyage! (Barnidge)
The Beard of Avon, Goodman, through Nov. 2, Goodman’s latest production revolves around that old historical bugaboo: did Shakespeare really write his own plays? Whip-smart direction by David Petrarca and a fresh take on the old mystery should prove, at the very least, engaging. (Reed)
The Secret Rapture, at Victory Gardens, through Nov. 10. David Hare’s gripping treatment of a family’s reaction to the aftermath of the death of its father should provide great fodder for the talented Remy Bumppo theater group. (Reed)
A Shayna Maidel, Attic Playhouse, through Oct. 20. In this nation of immigrants and their offspring, the struggles of two sisters reunited after WW II strike a universal chord. (Barnidge)
A Soldier’s Play: With stellar performances by E. Milton Wheeler and Will Sims II, Congo Square’s first play of the 2002/03 season, A Soldier’s Play, is a must-see for all patrons of the arts. The show runs through Nov. 10 at The Theatre Building, 1225 W. Belmont. See our full review next week. (McNeir)
