The University of Chicago has given a large house on the central campus to the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture; the Center for Gender Studies; and the Lesbian and Gay Studies Project of the CGS. They held an open house last week.
All three groups now have their administrative offices in the three-story house, which also has space for seminars, workshops, and more. “The University’s decision to give us the house represents a major new commitment on the administration’s part to the study of race, gender, and sexuality, and our decision to share the space represents a major commitment on the part of the faculty involved to encourage research and teaching that focuses on the intersections of these issues,” said Professor of History George Chauncey. “There are not many other universities in the country, if any, where these three research centers share a space and are working together so closely, and certainly not where lesbian and gay studies is playing such a central and equal role.”
The new Director of the Race Center is Cathy Cohen.
