Two lesbian activists have died. Sarah Pettit, founding editor of Out Magazine and, most recently, an editor at Newsweek, died Jan. 22. She was also arts editor for the now-defunct OutWeek, a New York gay and lesbian magazine which gained national prominence for ‘outing’ closeted gays. Pettit, 36, suffered from lymphoma.

Lesbian activist Mary Dunlap has died from pancreatic cancer. Dunlap, 54, was a founding member of Equal Rights Advocates. She argued in the U.S. Supreme Court against the U.S. Olympic Committee’s successful attempt to force the Gay Olympics to change its name to the Gay Games, reports the San Francisco Examiner.
