By an overwhelming majority (8-3), the Peoria City Council voted April 22 to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Peoria becomes the fourteenth city in Illinois to include sexual orientation in their local civil-rights ordinances.

‘A ‘yes’ vote tonight means I don’t agree with people being discriminated against. That’s it … . It doesn’t mean I agree with homosexuality. I don’t,’ said 1st District Councilman Clyde Gulley Jr., according to the Peoria Journal Star. Those for and against packed the Council chambers.
