The Fourth Graders Present an Unnamed Love-Suicide, Side Project, through May 31. The cruelties of childhood mesh with the Japanese puppet theater of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, in playwright Sean Graney’s horrifying and lyrical tragedy, as fresh as it is brisk. (Reed)
The Theory of Everything, DueEast Theatre at Wing & Groove, through May 31. Three generations of Asian immigrants (one of them gay) gather in Las Vegas to watch for UFOs, but America already is alien enough in Prince Gomolvilas’ cliche-free look at cultural conflict. (Barnidge)
The Way of the World, Mom & Dad Productions at Heartland Studio, May 23-June 28. Most Chicago theaters steer clear of fiendishly difficult English Restoration Comedy (1660-1700), yet its liberal sexuality and jaded attitude make it very modern. Tiny Mom & Dad can’t afford the costumes, but maybe they can capture the wit. (Abarbanel)
