At AGLOChicago’s recent 15th anniversary celebration, Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton (center) of the Archdiocese of Detroit, was presented with the ‘Rev. Kenneth Heavey Award’ by Jerry McEnany (left) and Louis Raia, the group’s co-directors. The award, named for a former AGLO leader, recognizes outstanding contributions to the GLBT community by a member of the clergy. Bishop Gumbleton has long spoken in favor of human rights for gays and lesbians, and he has been a frequent speaker and leader at New Ways Ministry conferences and other gay- and lesbian-affirming outreach. An official Archdiocese of Chicago community of faith for gay and lesbian Catholics, AGLOChicago also presented a Heavey Award to Br. Christopher Derby, SJ, head of the Xavier Dramatics Society at Xavier High School in New York City, which presented The Laramie Project play earlier this year. And, AGLO gave a ‘Paul Govea Award’ to each of two lay members, Jim Lux and Mike Scobey, for their service to the community. AGLO was formed by the Archdiocese after the church forced Dignity to conform with church teachings or be denied meeting space on church property. So Dignity, too, just marked an anniversary—their 15th year as an independent Catholic GLBT group.
