June went out with a Supreme Court bang, but July came in with a big local bang–the Cook County Board of Commissioners passed a domestic-partners registry for same-sex couples July 1. The bill, sponsored by Mike Quigley, John Stroger and John Daley, passed 13-3 with one “present” vote. It goes into effect in 90 days, and certificates will be administered by Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office. There was a strong showing of supporters for the Tuesday’s vote. Commissioner Carl Hansen spoke strongly against the measure, but most commissioners voiced their support in words and in their “yes” votes. See the July 9 Windy City Times for full coverage.
