Sunny skies greeted the estimated 5,000 Chicagoans who participated in this year’s AIDS Run & Walk Chicago Sept. 20, at Grant Park’s Museum Campus. The event netted $100,000 for HIV/AIDS projects at community-based agencies across metro Chicago and brought attention to the continuing battle against HIV/AIDS.
‘Chicagoans from all backgrounds came out to participate,’ said Mark Ishaug, executive director of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. Since 1988, AFC—the Run & Walk’s beneficiary and the largest source of HIV/AIDS philanthropic support in the Midwest—has provided nearly $13 million to area HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy groups.
Winners of post-event awards were: Matthew Knoop of Chicago as overall 5K run winner (male) and Maureen Giroux, also from Chicago, as overall 5K run winner (female). ‘Most Spirited Team’ awards went to Team Old Navy in the corporate category and Haymarket Center as the non-corporate honoree. ‘Fastest Team’ awards for the best running time went to the Lincoln Park Pacers (corporate) and to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center (non-corporate).
