Marjorie Butterworth, 78, died Feb. 21 at home after a struggle with cancer. In 1990 she and her longtime companion, Helen Paulliu, moved to the West Coast, returning to Chicago in 2000. Marjorie was born in Milwaukee Feb. 7, 1926. She graduated with her Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin and came to Chicago to study at the Goodman Theater School of Drama. After graduating there she joined a touring company, and ended up in New York City at the Uta Hagen School of Acting, first as a student and later as a teacher. She and a partner went on to establish their own school of acting, which was highly successful. This led to a short stint of producing and directing before she returned to Milwaukee to take care of her father. In 1969 she moved to Chicago where she taught special education at the Elmhurst School District. After retiring from teaching and getting her MA in psychology from George Williams College, she worked as a therapist in Wheaton. Her many friends and students remember her for her creative and vibrant spirit, her wit, and her lifelong devotion to the theater. Donations may be made in her name to Steppenwolf Theatre, Attn. Brooke Walters, 758 W. North Ave., Chicago, IL 60610.
