Jon F. Erickson, who was just 52 votes down out of 40,000 cast in the 8th Judicial Subcircuit race for judge, has sent a letter to his supporters conceding the race. The openly gay attorney was among three gays in the Democratic primary—which was eventually won by lesbian Sheryl Pethers.
‘I want to express my deepest and warmest thanks for all of your support over the last year,’ Erickson said to supporters. ‘It was quite a ride, sometimes difficult, never boring, and always full of purpose. And the knowledge that I had your support made it all the more enjoyable and worthwhile. … Although this is a razor-thin margin and many are encouraging me to call for a recount, I feel in an effort to be consistent with the dignity and respect we displayed throughout, that it would be in the best interests of all to gracefully concede.’
Erickson continued: ‘We fought the good fight, stuck to the issues, and with your help were able to travel throughout the district and talk to people about the judicial system and how it affects real people in real ways. We were privileged to have had the opportunity to meet with people from various communities and succeed in breaking down barriers and dispelling stereotypes. We talked about domestic violence and hate crime and the need for judges that understand these issues. We talked about equal access to the system despite gender or financial position and the need for all to be treated by our judiciary with dignity, equality and respect. And for this opportunity, I thank you.’
