People for the American Way (PFAW) and People for the American Way Foundation (PFAWF) present the Spirit of Liberty Celebration on Monday, June 14, 2004 at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn Street. The Spirit of Liberty Celebration will honor U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Chicagoan Studs Terkel, and actress and activist Judith Light for their extraordinary contributions to advancing the values and principles at the core of the American Way: freedom of religion, tolerance, civic responsibility and equal opportunity. PFAWF Founder Norman Lear, actress Valerie Harper and singer-songwriter Carole King will be among the evening’s presenters. Amanda McBroom and Charles Dutton will provide entertainment.

The Spirit of Liberty is given by People for the American Way and the People for the American Way Foundation to individuals who have worked tirelessly to promote and defend democratic values in their chosen fields. The 2004 honorees are:

People For the American Way Foundation, founded two decades ago by TV producer Norman Lear, Rep. Barbara Jordan, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh and other leaders, defends and promotes civic participation, constitutional liberties, civil rights, quality public education and an independent judiciary through research, litigation, communications, and grassroots organizing.
