Anne Mothkovich, 25, (left) is a senior at Northeastern Illinois University double-majoring in History and Women’s studies. The work that she has done on her campus, with friend, Robin Matthies, includes the organization of the school’s ‘Coming Out Ball’, and the continuing effort to push administration to protect students from homophobia.
Anne says one of the biggest issues that the GLBT community faces is a lack of unity, and through the ‘Coming Out Ball,’ Anne has helped create a safe and healthy event for all members of the GLBT community. In addition to being secretary of the GLBA student group at her university, Anne is president of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance. As president, Anne founded a three-day film festival that began last February and featured films with a focus on feminist, GLBT and globalization issues. She also helped plan to send Chicago students to Washington, D.C., in April for the March for Women’s Lives and has organized self-defense workshops on campus.
This past spring, Anne held voter registration on campus and is organizing another large registration drive for the fall. She also served on a committee which conducted an AIDS awareness week that reached out to students by distributing information and condoms, and brought speakers from TPAN and Howard Brown to present. After graduating, Anne hopes to go to graduate school and teach women’s studies courses focusing on women’s and GLBT history.
