In a move that did not shock many poll watchers, Missouri voters overwhelmingly voted Aug. 3 for a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Eyes were focused on the state because it is the first to vote on a same-sex marriage ban since the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court backed such unions.

Louisiana voters will take a stand on a similar amendment Sept. 18, as will voters in at least eight (or as many as 11) states Nov. 2.
