The final installment of the groundbreaking Chicago Historical Society series on GLBT Chicago ended Sunday with a packed house learning about ‘Women, Womyn, Grrls, and Kings,’ a program on women’s music history in the city, and how it influenced the national women’s music movement. Coordinated by women’s music pioneer Toni Armstrong Jr. with co-producers Jackie Anderson and Evette Cardona, the day featured panel discussions and historic performances. The band Surrender Dorothy performed together for the first time in 19 years (Armstrong, Paula Walowitz and Laurie Lee Moses), there was a tribute to Ginni Clemmens, Artemis Singers sang, Ubaka Hill performed, the band Kim performed together for the last time, and much more. In the coming weeks see excerpts from the panel discussions. Pictured: Tammy Cresswell, the voice of women’s music future, spoke about the new trends in music, coming off her successful (and mostly sold-out) week of Estrojam events. She’s with Kristen Lems (right), who performed, and spoke about founding the National Women’s Music Festival, the longest-running women’s music festival. More herstories in the next issue of WCT.
