You could do worse than spend New Year’s Eve with George Gershwin. You know the music will be gay, although George was not. He wrote “The Man I Love” (with lyricist brother Ira), but available evidence is fairly conclusive that never-married-died-at-39 Gershwin was straight. We must be content that he was America’s greatest popular composer. In George Gershwin Alone, now in an open run at the Royal George Theatre, the affable Gershwin is portrayed by gifted pianist-actor-writer Hershey Felder, who bases part of his show on Gershwin’s live radio broadcasts. Felder also plays Gershwin’s own difficult piano arrangements. (312) 988-9000; $37.50-$55.
