The buzz is constantly increasing about a strike slated for Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, to protest the war in Iraq. Called ‘Not One Damn Dime Day,’ it is being publicized as a way for Americans to ‘speak’ through inaction.
Advocates of Not One Damn Dime Day want people across the country to participate in a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending. The message, which is being circulated in an e-mail around the nation, is as follows: ‘For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down. The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it.’
Event backers insist there is another reason to stage the protest. Advocates state that the boycott is to remind those in charge that they work for the people who elected them, not for corporations and lobbyists.
