Marge Simpson’s chain-smoking sis Patty Bouvier came out Sunday night on the much-ancitipated episode of The Simpsons of fictional anywhere-town Springfield Sunday night, just in time to take advantage of the town’s cynical passing of same-sex marriage laws. Why cynical? It was an effort to lure the gay dollar. Simpsons’ character Waylon Smithers has always been assumed to be gay, but this is the first official ‘coming out’ for the show. At least this was on commercial TVC, and not public TV—safe from the censoring eyes of the Bush cabinet. The town had a theme song (based on the ‘Banana Boat Song’): ‘Gay-o, it’s O.K.-o, Tie the knot and spend all your dough.’
