Local marriage equality activists planned to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of Massachusetts issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples by delivering petitions for marriage equality to Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office, 69 W. Washington at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 17.
Since the summer of 2004, members of Equal Marriage NOW! and Gay Liberation Network have been gathering petitions calling on David Orr to begin immediately issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples and have gathered several thousand signatures including those of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, Ald. Richard Mell and Ald. Tom Tunney.
Members of Equal Marriage NOW! and Gay Liberation Network planned to present the petitions to Orr to remind him that the issue of marriage equality has not gone away and to renew their demand that he stop discriminating against same-sex couples and begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Cook County.
