Heavily involved in the arts (especially poetry), Kay Barrett, 26, serves as a teaching artist-in-residence of poetry and poetry slam team coach at Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School in Chicago. She also has performed with the Mango Tribe for the 2005 INCITE color of violence conference as well as been an educator and stage manager for The Center for Immigrant Rights & Community Arts (CIRCA). In keeping with her passion, she has been a spoken word artist for various organizations, including Amigas Latinas En Accion, Rape Victim Advocates, and the PINTIG cultural group. In addition, Barrett has been a featured poet on many occasions (including the 2002 Chicago Poetry Festival) and has been published in publications such as Maganda magazine. Also, she has been nominated as an outstanding pinoy (Filipino or Filipino-American) by pinoyqueer.com and has helped organize the Chicago Dyke March for the past four years.
