Thousands sweated for a cause Saturday, Sept. 17 for the 2005 AIDS Run & Walk Chicago. Organizers estimated there were more than 5,000 walkers and runners who helped net more than $200,000.

Many individuals, organizations and corporations slapped on sneakers and gathered at Grant Park for the annual 5K run and walk, which benefits the AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s (AFC) grant-making program. In addition, 10 percent of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the National AIDS Emergency Fund that helps provide food, shelter, healthcare and medications to HIV-positive Katrina evacuees.

The AFC has provided more than $15 million since 1988 to local HIV/AIDS groups. Since it began in 2001, the annual AIDS Run & Walk has netted almost $660,000.
