The Lesbian Community Cancer Project (LCCP) will now be able to help healthcare providers help the LBT demographic. The Illinois Department of Public Health has awarded the organization $75,000 to create the country’s first online curriculum for providers. In turn, they will learn how to best provide culturally competent care to LBTs.
‘Every woman in Illinois deserves access to early detection screening and treatment,’ State Sen. Carol Ronen, D-Chicago, said in a press release. ‘Discrimination is not tolerated in Illinois and this online curriculum is an important step in ensuring no woman is discriminated against when seeking healthcare.’
Since 2003, LCCP has trained more than 800 providers in 40 institutions. The face-to-face trainings can last from one hour to an entire day and cover everything from sexual identity to racism.
The curriculum will be available by late spring or early summer. LCCP plans to work closely with other LGBT healthcare experts and Internet curriculum specialists to ensure that the online experience is both high-quality and intriguing.
