Northwestern University’s Kellogg Business School certainly has a lot to offer. Ranked as the No. 1 business school by BusinessWeek (giving it five top rankings, more than any other institution), Kellogg offers a rigorous course load as well as untold job opportunities for its students. However, it also has a very LGBT-friendly atmosphere.
The latter assessment was the conclusion of a panel as Kellogg hosted Coming Out for Your MBA, which was held Oct. 18 at The Boston Consulting Group, 200 S. Wacker. The purpose of the event was to inform prospective LGBT MBA students about the school and the organization known as the Gay and Lesbian Management Association (GLMA).
Jevelyn Bonner-Reed, admissions officer at Kellogg, kicked things off by discussing general aspects of the school, including the International Exchange Program (conducted with schools in such cities such as Beijing and London) and student-led conferences.
Then, a panel composed of current students (Julie Bennett and GLMA co-president David Cavanaugh) as well as alumni (David Radin and Michael Abdou) talked about more LGBT-related facets and fielded questions from the audience. ‘I think one of the things that surprised me is how supportive everyone is,’ Bennett commented. ‘Most places are so cutthroat but here people are constantly helping you out [in general].’ Other topics included coming out in the school application (which Bonner-Reed and the panel recommended if coming out is truly important to the applicant or potentially pertinent to one’s career) and the plethora of gay and general events.
