On Memorial Day weekend, the Chicago Chapter of the Americans for Equal Rights (formerly Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Veterans of America) laid a wreath at the grave of Seaman Allen Schindler in Steger, Ill. In 1992 Schindler was brutally murdered by fellow shipmates while stationed in Japan. The gay veterans and his mother, Dorothy Hajdys-Holman (center), have visited the grave each year since his murder. Photo by Jean Albright
