At the 60th annual Tony Awards, audience favorite Jersey Boys took home the award for Best Musical at Sunday night’s ceremony held at Radio City Music Hall, The New York Daily News reported. Add to that the haul of History Boys, which snagged six awards (including Best Play), and it definitely was a ‘boys’ night out.
Jersey Boys—the retelling of the life and songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons—was also a winner for John Lloyd Young, who took home the Best Actor in a Musical prize.
Another multiple winner was The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical about a Broadway starlet who attempts to find and keep love. It won five Tonys, including Original Score and Book of a Musical.
Also, former Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon won the award for Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Becca in Rabbit Hole, a drama exploring how parents deal with the life-shattering accidental death of their daughter. LaChanze caused the audience to gasp when she topped Patti LuPone and Chita Rivera to win Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Celie in The Color Purple, which is produced by Oprah Winfrey.
