Four former Wisconsin governors jointly announced that they oppose adding a ban on same-sex marriages and civil partnerships to the state constitution.

Former Democratic Governors Patrick Lucey, Martin Schreiber and Tony Earl and former Republican Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus called the proposed amendment ‘harsh and far-reaching’ and that it ‘runs contrary to the values of freedom and fairness that make Wisconsin great,’ the Capital Times reported.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the amendment reads: ‘Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state.’

Voters will decide the question on Nov. 7, when they will also cast votes for governor and attorney general as well as determine if death penalty should be restored.
