Among the myriad groups that appeared in Chicago during the Gay Games was the Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign. Members of the national organization appeared everywhere, from religion chairperson Harry Knox’s appearance at a faith forum on July 16 to the group’s booth at the Games’ vendor expo, held July 14-17.
President Joe Solmonese was also in Chicago as part of the national Count Me In tour. ‘I think the most important reason we’re here is to try to bring more people into the important work that we’re planning to do in these elections,’ he told Windy City Times. ‘If there is a group of Americans congregating somewhere in this country, we will be there to try to impact what’s going on and to sign people up for the work we’ll be doing. … No matter how you slice it, the only way we’ll going to get where we need to be is with more GLBT-friendly people in Congress.’ He described the response during the Games as ‘extraordinary.’
