In an e-mail to her friends and other supporters, departing Lesbian Community Cancer Project (LCCP) Executive Director Jessica Halem detailed accomplishments—and feelings.
‘It has been such an honor to serve as the Executive Director of what I consider one of the finest organizations in Chicago—and beyond,’ she began. ‘We have created a model non-profit that has weathered difficult times, taken the lead on important issues and made a real effect on the health and well-being of Chicago’s LGBTQ community.
Halem also listed some of the achievements made while she helmed LCCP, including financial stability, a strong alliance with Howard Brown Health Center and becoming a leader on trans-related issues. Of the last item, she stated that ‘I’m proud to say LCCP was one of the first to do the right thing but we were just the beginning.’
She also mentioned the organization’s partnership with Gilda’s Club and a staff composed of ‘talented and dedicated individuals.’ However, Halem mentioned that what she will take away most from her half-decade as LCCP’s leader ‘are the gifts from those who have faced cancer and allowed me to be a part of their journey.’
On Aug. 14, Lisa Tonna assumed the mantle of interim executive director, and Halem expressed confidence in Tonna’s abilities, noting her years of experience at Center on Halsted as well as her skills in therapy and midwifery.
LCCP’s board of directors is conducting a nationwide search for Halem’s successor. Qualified applicants may submit materials to Michael Godnick at info@mgodnick.com or to 4555 N. Hermitage, Chicago, IL 60640. All inquires will be kept strictly confidential.
