Funds will help replace books from LGBT collection damaged in last summer’s arson.
On Nov. 28, 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney accepted a check for $825 from the Lake View Clergy to help replace the books damaged at the John Merlo Public Library, 644 W. Belmont.
Prior to this donation by the clergy, 10 gifts totaling $865 had been given by the community and 60 of the 62 LGBT books damaged in the fire have already been replaced by the Chicago Public Library. All additional funds collected will be used to enhance and expand the LGBT collection.
Erica Graham, a 21-year-old homeless woman, was charged with starting the June 13 fire. Eventually, she was sentenced to 24 months probation and 94 days in jail (credited as time served). She was also ordered to pay $545 in restitution.
To contribute, send checks to the Chicago Public Library Foundation, 20 N. Michigan, Suite 204, Chicago, IL 60604. Please attach a note with your check if you want it to benefit a specific collection or branch.
