The film Dreamgirls solidified its chances of receiving Academy Award nominations on Jan. 15, when it snagged Golden Globe wins for best musical or comedy as well as awards for supporting actors Eddie Murphy and Chicago native Jennifer Hudson. The movie, based loosely on Diana Ross and the Supremes, features dazzling choreography, glittering costumes and substantial drama.

The sprawling Babel, which plays out in four languages across three continents, won the award for best drama. It had led all nominees with seven and emerged with just that one win. In doing so, it edged Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (although he won) and The Queen. Helen Mirren won for Best Actress in a Drama for The Queen while Meryl Streep won for Best Actress in a Comedy for The Devil Wears Prada. (Mirren also won a television Golden Globe for her work in Elizabeth I.) Forest Whitaker and Sacha Baron Cohen (in a surprise) took the male drama and comedic acting awards, respectively, for The Last King of Scotland and Borat.

Regarding awards in television, Ugly Betty won for Best Musical or Comedy Series while its star, America Ferrara, took the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
