Riverdance returns. It’s neither musical, nor ballet, nor folk dance or folk music, although it’s inspired by the authentic music and dance of Ireland, homeland of the show’s producers. What this hugely successful phenomenon is, is pure and unadulterated cultural kitsch—an overblown and over-amplified spectacle that mistakes size for substance every time. But, if chorus lines impress you, you’ll never see a bigger one, nor more men in tight trousers, open shirts and butch boots; nor more red-haired lasses similarly dressed. The original Riverdance company brought fame and wealth to one-time Chicagoan Michael Flatley, and he’s welcome to them. Riverdance redux is at the Auditorium, through April 15; 312-902-1400; $20-$70. Photo by Joan Marcus
