\ New musicals gotta come from somewhere and ya gotta test them in front of a live audience. Both conditions will be met Aug. 10-12 as Theatre Building Chicago presents Stages 2007, its annual weekend festival during which musical theater junkies can catch new shows about Dracula author Bram Stoker, about the 1950s creation of a Playboy-like magazine, about a high-glam performer turned bag lady and about Motherhood among other works in progress. Also: In a rare event, Richard Rodgers’ failed late-career Henry VIII musical, Rex, will be revived, as reworked by Bernstein’s surviving collaborators, Sherman Yellen and Sheldon Harnick.
