J.K. Rowling, author of the beyond-successful Harry Potter series, surprised a group of fans Oct. 19 at New York’s Carnegie Hall by outing the character known as the beloved headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.

Answering an inquiry about the educator’s love life, Rowling said, “I always saw Dumbledore as gay.” Dumbledore fell in love with the dark wizard known as Grindelwald…. “Don’t forget, falling in love can blind us. [He] was very drawn to this brilliant person. This was Dumbledore’s tragedy.” After gasping, the audience applauded the statement.
