The Gay Liberation Network (GLN) organized the demonstration to dramatize the issue to the voting public and to draw attention to their position that civil unions are unacceptable. Led by the Radical Cheerleaders, several voluble young women, the group chanted, ‘Obama, Obama, let mama marry mama,’ as it marched to Republican headquarters at 205 W. Randolph and then to Obama’s campaign office at 300 W. Adams. Among those speaking were GLN’s Andy Thayer and Brent Holman; Holman pointed out that current state department immigration policy allows heterosexual, non-citizen spouses immediate access to the United States—a courtesy not extended to the same-sex partners of the LGBT community.
