Israel’s attorney general, Menachem Mazuz, has announced that same-sex couples in that country will have the same rights regarding adoption as their heterosexual counterparts, according to a release from the consulate general of Israel in New York.

Prior to the decision, couples could not adopt unless the child was one of the partners’ biological offspring.

Welfare Minister Isaac Herzog applauded the development, saying ‘There is no reason why same-sex couples who meet the criteria for adoption should not be able to join the process of adoption and of parenthood. We must adapt to the spirit of the times and the changes that are afoot.’
