Renowned disabled genderqueer activist Eli Clare presented ‘Gawking, Gaping, Staring: Living in Marked Bodies’ Oc. 10 at Access Living, 115 W. Chicago. Through words and images, Clare explored the internal experiences of living in marked bodies and the external meanings of oppression and bodily difference. Among other things, he discussed how others can ‘steal’ bodies from those who are oppressed—such as the disabled, racial minorities and those who are overweight—and how those mistreated groups actually ‘reclaim’ their bodies. Incidentally, Access Living announced that it will start a support group for queer disabled individuals early next year. Photo of Clare by Andrew Davis
