A controversial situation involving a billboard praising a local production of Xanadu has been quickly resolved.

The billboard was located across from Nettelhorst Elementary School, 3252 N. Broadway. It praised the Broadway in Chicago production of Xanadu, including words from Vanity Fair magazine that said the show “is like taking Ecstasy.”

Cindy Wulbert, principal of Nettelhorst, told Windy City Times that some of the students’ parents thought the billboard was “no big deal” but that others “felt that there shouldn’t be billboards with drug references so close to the school. … Some parents thought that [the billboard] came off as praising Ecstasy.” Wulbert added that she had no problem with the billboard praising the show itself because Nettelhorst is “a performing-arts school;” however, the reference created a problem.

“It’s totally unintentional, I know,” Wulbert said. “We support Broadway in Chicago and we know they’re not advocating drug use. It’s just that some of our parents were concerned.”
