In supporting the legality of Prop 8, last fall’s ban on same-sex marriage sin California, that state’s Supreme Court has set up an interesting double standard for LGBTs. The 18,000 marriages performed last year during the brief time (July 16-Nov. 4) when gay marriage was legal will stand; but no new gay marriages will be allowed.
The decision was 6-1.

Nationwide, activists have been planning a response to the court’s decision. In Chicago, Gay Liberation Network and Join the Impact are coordinating a response for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted.
The national group was co-founded by Chicago’s Andy Thayer and lesbian activist Robin Tyler, who with wife Diane Olson was the first lesbian couple to file in the California marriage equality case that lead to the 18,000 legal marriage last summer, and they are plaintiffs in this most current case against Prop 8.
