About 100 women were at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted, to celebrate the successes of Amigas Latinas on June 6 when the organization held its annual award and scholarship event. The group filled a long hallway with photos of its activites over the last 14 years, and members promised a continuation of growth and new successes as they prepare for their quincea”era next year. Writer Achy Obejas, this year’s guest of honor, thanked the crowd in Spanish and English as she explained that the award was symbolic of the fact that positive change is and does happen, especially considering that Amigas Latinas didn’t even exist when she was coming out.
