Amelie Mauresmo—the out Frenchwoman who was once the top-ranked female tennis player in the world—has retired, according to CBSSportsline.com.
Mauresmo, 30, finished this season at No. 21. She became the first player from France, male or female, to reach the No. 1 spot Sept. 13, 2004. In 2006, she won Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
“I don’t want to train anymore,” Mauresmo said. “I had to make a decision, which became evident in the last few months and weeks. When you grew older, it’s more difficult to stay at the top.”
