This year marked the third appearance at SXSW for Toronto synth-pop duo Woodhands, who made the trek down to Austin in support its latest album, Remorsecapade (Paper Bag). Despite noticable industry shifts, including an ever-growing presence of corporate sponsors at official and unofficial SXSW events, drummer Paul Banwatt and frontman Dan Werb believe that playing the festival can still have a positive effect on an emerging band’s career. “We were really green the first time we came down here, and we didn’t know what we wanted. We played our label showcase, and then as many day parties as possible,” said Banwatt. They learned from that experience, and rethought their game plan for future festival appearances “For one thing,” said Werb, “Anticipating quick turnovers and multiple shows per day—you have to have all of your gear working awesome. We designed a new system of synthesizers and drum machines and engineered it especially for our configurations.”
After a citing exposure to new audiences and industry personnel that have resulted in more media exposure as well as the opportunity to play other festivals in the future. “I feel the best about this year than any SXSW we’ve done so far,” said Banwatt. “It’s [reaching] that critical mass,” said Werb. “There are enough sponsors now and so many people and organizations invested in the conference, that opportunities for bands… it’s funny because bands aren’t really the center of things any more but at the same time, bands have so many opportunities. Playing a hot party isn’t going to do much for you, but it’s awesome.”
