Athletica came out fighting and scored in the fourth minute against goalkeeper Jillian Loyden. The Red Stars had a much stronger second half, with several close scoring opportunities and good team hustle, including by sub Karen Carney, who always adds a great spark when she’s in the game. Julianne Sitch of Oswego, Ill., also adds a great new energy to the Red Stars.
The Red Stars goal came in the 59th minute. Midfielder Casey Nogueria scored her first-ever Women’s Professional Soccer goal, with an assist by Katie Chapman.
