The Chicago Sky was a latecomer, joining the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) almost 10 years after the association was formed. However, it has been quick to catch up with its sister teams in recognizing all women and the lesbian community, specifically, as a strong component of their fan base. This year, the Sky has surpassed many other teams in the league by hosting an official “Gay Day” July 23.
The Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus performed the national anthem and several lesbian groups were represented in the stands, including POW-WOW, Amigas Latinas en Accion, Affinity and the Lesbian Community Care Project—each one mentioned by name over the loudspeaker.
At press time, Windy City Times was not able to confirm if this was a coincidence or scheduled as part of Gay Day but, during halftime, fans were introduced to Chicago’s own Jackie Anderson, an African-American lesbian who has been a pillar of the community for years. C.C. Carter, another Chicago icon, secretly nominated Anderson for the Woman of Inspiration Award. Both were pleasantly surprised when Anderson was selected for this honor.
