Clerk Dorothy Brown

While Cook County Clerk’s office issued 831 civil-union licenses in just the first month they were available, Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown reported that just 14 couples have filed for divorce as of July 22.

According to Brown, her office issued 12 dissolutions within the first week and has since only issued two.

Same-sex couples were able to get divorced in Illinois starting June 1, when civil unions took effect. Many exes, who had been married or had civil unions in other states, had waited until that day to file dissolutions in Illinois.

Jalyne Strong, a spokesperson for Brown’s office said that none of the divorces were from Illinois unions. Eight were from Canada, while three were from Vermont, two from Massachusetts and one from Connecticut.

“We are ready to assist with filings if necessary; however, we continue to wish everyone a long happy life together.” said Brown in a press statement.
