Diana Ross lead The Supremes to success, then launched a successful solo career with a string of hits crossing over decades. Still touring after all of this time, Miss Ross made an appearance over the weekend at The Venue in Hammond, Ind.
She started by singing “I’m Coming Out” dressed in white and gold. Speaking of coming out, her gay fans were in the front row, where she spotted them and stated “You are hot!” Positivity reigned with the cover of “More Today Than Yesterday” and a string of Supremes songs: “Where Did Our Love Go” “Baby Love” and “Stop! In the Name of Love.” Yes, it was a love fest with “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “Love Child” following that.
The audience did truly love her, as many fans sang with the lyrics. Sporting a huge band and backup singers that covered for her while she slipped backstage to try on a variety of glittery frocks, “The Boss” was in the house. One blue number went along with a Billie Holiday set of “Fine and Mellow” and “Don’t Explain.” Her take on those classics have always been lighter, but seem to work in a live setting.
The lady quit singing the blues and broke into theme from Mahogany before closing with a cover of “I Will Survive” that had people dancing in the aisles. The house lights came up and many left missing the surprise that she returned. She asked the diehards what to sing, and then treated them to “Reach Out and Touch,” grabbing fans’ hands.
